These performances by the pre-eminent pianist of the originating years of modern jazz are from the mid-1950s. Bud Powell, who was to die in 1966, had already paid heavy dues by the time of these sessions.
The way he conceived a tune could really surprise you. Yes, it could, and it does here.
When Bud was into his music, he was really into it. Yeats once said of another artist that it was impossible to separate the dancer from the dance. Same with Bud. As Gitler put it, "the man was one with the music itself."
